Modeler 2025 has been launched by Alexey Vanzhula, a substantial update to the modeling toolkit for Houdini. This version has been meticulously re-engineered "from the ground up" to enhance its integration within Houdini, providing a more seamless user experience. It also introduces advanced tools for retopologizing models, facilitating the creation of all-quad geometry.

| A Classic Hard Surface and Boolean Modeling Environment for Houdini

Originally released in 2018 as Direct Modeling HDA, Modeler serves as a classic modeling environment for Houdini, designed to streamline workflows to align more closely with those found in other digital content creation (DCC) applications. The toolkit encompasses a comprehensive array of tools for polygonal and subdivision modeling, as well as retopology.

| Modeler 2025: Seamless Integration with Houdini

Modeler 2025 represents a major structural overhaul, involving a complete rewrite of nearly all Python and VEX code, along with a redesign of all HDAs. Vanzhula emphasizes that this update aims to eliminate the feeling of using a separate program within Houdini, making Modeler function as a true native component of the platform.

Users can now access Modeler tools directly without activating a separate mode, and all tools are conveniently stored on shelves, allowing for standard hotkey assignment. The contextual menus have also been redesigned to resemble Houdini’s interface, with the capability to detach and reposition them within the viewport. Additionally, Modeler 2025 includes seven pre-configured radial menus for quick access to display options and essential toolsets.

| Enhanced Retopology Tools

Modeler 2025 introduces innovative retopology features, including the new Draw Patch tool, which allows users to create uniform all-quad geometry by sketching boundaries directly on the surface being retopologized, utilizing a workflow similar to that of TopoGun. The existing PolyPen tool has been refined for greater convenience in topology editing, particularly with stylus use. Enhancements include symmetrical modeling support, automatic edge and loop welding, and the ability to flatten edge loops based on the viewport camera.

The Face tool, designed for polygon creation from selected points or edges, has also been revamped to simplify the process of filling gaps in curved polygonal cages.

| New and Updated Tools

Additional tools in Modeler 2025 include Sculpt Move and Sculpt Relax, which leverage the reworked Sculpt SOP introduced in Houdini 20.5 while respecting symmetry settings. New Linear Falloff and Radial Falloff tools, reminiscent of those found in Modo, have also been added. Furthermore, many existing tools such as Bevel, Thickness, Connect, and Knife have received significant updates.
