Epic Games has unveiled Unreal Engine 5.5, the latest major iteration of their game engine and real-time renderer. This release is substantial, with the release notes spanning over 100 sections, each detailing multiple features.

The updates cover all major toolsets, including level design, coding, and audio. Here are the top 10 key features for CG artists:

1.MegaLights: This experimental feature allows the use of hundreds of dynamic lights in real-time scenes. Known as the 'Nanite of lights', it enables artists to use significantly more lights while maintaining real-time performance. The system uses ray tracing by default and supports area, point, and spot lights.


2.Light Function Atlas: This feature bakes computationally expensive animated light functions into 2D textures, reducing processing overhead during runtime. It can be used alongside the MegaLights system.

3.Control Rig: Major updates to the rigging and animation workflow now allow for the creation of animatable deformers within Control Rig, which can be applied to characters in the Sequencer animation editor. An Animator Kit plugin provides a library of readymade Control Rigs with built-in deformers.

4.Modular Control Rig and Chaos Modular Vehicles: The Modular Control Rig moves into beta, featuring new modules for creating rigs for quadrupeds and vehicles. The Chaos Modular Vehicles system, an experimental plugin, allows for the creation and destruction of vehicles at runtime.

5.Sequencer: The new animation layers workflow provides greater control over animations, allowing for non-destructive edits. Animators can add, remove, mute, merge layers, and assign animatable weights to individual layers.

6.MetaHuman Animator: This feature supports audio-driven facial animation, streamlining the process of transferring facial motion from audio files to MetaHuman characters within Unreal Engine. It provides realistic facial animation by inferring upper face movements.

7.Mutable: This plugin, now in beta, allows for the procedural generation of asset variants, including characters, creatures, props, and weapons. It handles layered clothing, improving performance and preventing intersections.

8.Day Sequence: This experimental plugin generates an in-game 24-hour lighting cycle, with adjustable components such as the sun, moon, stars, atmosphere, and clouds. It supports multiplayer synchronization and POI creation.

9.NFOR Denoiser: This experimental feature for the Path Tracer provides temporally stable denoising for rendered animations, intended for high-quality offline rendering.

10.Color Grading Panel: Now available for general use, this tool offers a rich interface for creative color manipulation, supporting post-process volumes and color correction regions.
