Otoy has launches the first public version of its GPU production renderer, Octane 2022. The update provides over 20 DCC integrations for creators across various fields and give artists access to "near unlimited rendering power" across millions of GPUs available on the Render Network. Let's take a look at some of the highlighted features together!
| What's New in Octane 2022
A new photon tracing kernel, which Otoy describes as making caustics and sharp irradiance "nearly free" and "about 1000x faster" than the previous implementation by using "novel combination of GPU photon mapping and path guiding" to generate sharp, non-noisy caustics even at very low sample counts, is introduced into OctaneRender 2022.1.
In addition, a new Standard Surface Material node based on the Autodesk Standard Surface specification have been implemented, allowing users to greater visual parity between output from OctaneRender and other renderers that support the specification, like Arnold.
Meanwhile, implementation of individual layers have also been updated, including Textured anisotropy, Oren Nayar diffuse BRDF, Specular boundary SSS layer, Diffuse boundary SSS layer and Reparameterization of material inputs, giving better support for Standard Surface specification.
For all Arnold renderer users, the new Standard Volume is introduced for volumetric effects like clouds, bringing a better handling of black body emission, and better control of the color of light scattered by the volume, and of objects seen through it.
Another highlight worth noting is the multi-render system that allows users to switch between Octane itself and other compatible third-party renderer like Anold, Blender's Cycles engine, Redshift and Unreal Engine. It seems to be a really exciting step, but considering that since the introduction of the annual version, not one stable version is released within a year, the announcement seems a litter bit over-optimistic.
| Addition Services
The Octane 2022 subscriptions come with 20+ DCC integrations for artist across different fields. All subscribers are getting access to a wider range of bundled software, and new stock assets like KitBash3D, Greyscalegorilla+, EmberGenFX and so on.
In addition, the top-tier package, previously known as RNDR+, has now been renamed Enterprise+, to reflect the change of name of Otoys distributed GPU render network from RNDR to The Render Network.
